i attended a lovely house concert at tobi and rick’s in bryan on april 5th. it was actually quite wonderful to just attend a show and not be the chick in charge of it. i can see why y’all like house concerts so much [grin].

there was, however, one sore spot to the night — a murmuring among the houseketeers that the chick in charge has hung up her spurs, that rphc is kaput. i told everyone that this was indeed a nasty rumor and that i would be scheduling again soon!

it seems that the proof is always in the pudding, though, so i thought i’d earn my nickname and get back to bidness. yes, i’m busy scheduling some great shows for you and soon the prairie will be filled with beautiful music again. nothing like a tragic rumor to bring one out of a dreamy hibernation…

i’ll announce an official schedule real soon. look for bookings with the Shake Russell Trio, Craig Cardiff, Sisters Morales and AustiNites Brass Band, a kickin’ new orleans brass band who have become austinites since katrina (get it?). they played recently at my sister’s cajun restaurant in austin (sambet’s) and they are so funky and fun, you won’t want to miss it!

yeah, just what you’ve come to expect from rphc: an eclectic assortment of fabulous artists ranging from Shake’s texicana to the Sisters’ feel-it-deep Latina sound, to Craig’s acoustic folk with a spiritual tinge, to AustiNites sheer FUNk. click on the links, enjoy some tunes to get you in the moooood and, as they say …

Pardon Our Hiccups

02.2008

OH DEAR! The web site was down for awhile… seems my credit card expired on the info they use to bill me annually. Like Robert Earl says, “It’s the little things that p—- me off.” but now we’re back in bidness, website-wise at least.

house concerts … well that’s been a little tougher. God knows that i love my music (loggins & messina) but it’s been a challenge to manage all that’s on the plates in the chick-n-rick household. y’all bear with me, i haven’t given up on ol’ RPHC; we’re just on a much needed hiatus, i guess. or hibernation. or something.

i miss all-o-y’all in my living room just about as much as i miss the warm strains of violins and geetars swimming in my dreams after a long and glorious evening of music on the prairie.

so i’ll be in touch just as SOON as we get another show or six scheduled.

i promise.

My father-in-law's book!

‘til then, i have a book recommendation fer ya. my father-in-law jim taylor has published his first novel, West of West it’s a western, and although western has not typically been this city-girl’s genre, i read this lovely gem cover to cover and i laughed out loud, i gasped and i cried, no kiddin’. i have never cried reading a novel before and i’ve read lotsa novels.

you can sample the first couple dozen pages on-line (click here).

then when you want to finish it off, you can order directly from that site, or barnes and noble, or amazon.com (but authorhouse, the publisher, is the cheapest source at only $13.95). better yet, if you want a copy signed by the author, drop me a line! i have connections ;), and i won’t even jack up the price for the autograph! you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll thank me and then you’ll wonder, like me, how this guy could have waited seven decades to publish his first book.

don’t worry, he’s retired now and moved from his big ranch in seguin to a gin-u-wine “little house on the prairie”, yeah, just a mile or so from rphc, so he can have more time to write. says there are lots more stories where that one came from. i can’t wait. and neither should you.

love, peace and prairie music,

martha, aka the chick in charge
