Season 2 Title

a rare house concert performance by Canadian legend

FRED EAGLESMITH

with special guest Jay Sims

Mon, March 7, 2005

pinch me, i’m dreamin! the incomparable Fred Eaglesmith performed an acoustic bluegrass show with his five piece band during his 2nd annual Texas Weekend.  fred plays prestigious - and much larger - venues in dallas, houston and gruene/new braunfels, but seats at rphc were the most intimate on the tour, for fred’s first house concert ever in aggieland. what’s more, luckenbach regular jay sims kicked off the evening with some new tunes and old favorites.  this show was S-R-O and C-O-O-L.  just ask the gaffers!

DANA COOPER

returned by request to RPHC!

Sat, April 23, 2005

dana, along with shake russell, launched our series in june of last year. he had such a good time he called and asked if he could come back! (you could’ve blown me over with that little birdie’s feather!)  dana kept our toes tapping and our hands clapping with his special blend of americana, folk rock and edgy falsetto vocals.  his lyrics are literature and swept us all away.

SIDEHILL GOUGERS

aggieland’s own

Sat, May 7, 2005

fresh off a hiatus to heal a broken heart, mexican style (shane), get married (jamie) and take home a prize from a TOTFA contest (andy), this talented trio made us laugh, cry and sing with stories and songs old and new.  you can never get enough of jamie’s vocals, andy’s fiddle and shane’s ballads.  this is talent taking flight.  see ‘em every chance you get, so you can say you knew ‘em when…

RPHC’s birthday bash!

Fri, June 17, 2005

rphc turned one year old and i turned one year older!  the chick in charge had her day served up her way, with a long awaited peformance by none other than the one who inspired me to pursue the house concert project, mr. jay sims.  a true texas troubador and hill country original, jay is a skillful lyricist, guitarist and dobro player, and a favorite both at luckenbach and at our own annual KEOS volunteer jam.  fresh tunes resulting from a recent and prolific visit from his muse kept us enrapt, the crowd hanging on every word spoken and sung.  the perfect way to spend a birthday, i wish all of y’all could have been me that night…. red icing plague and all.  thanks jay and rp concerteers!

TAKIN’ IT OUTSIDE!

ALTEZA

austin originals

Fri, October 21, 2005

this six-piece band of exuberants was just too hot to keep it indoors, with their self-described “Mexiclectic” blend of Latin, Americana and roots music. so rphc built a stage in the backyard and we held our first outdoor show! lots of Latin percussion put everyone in the groove. in the words of one Concerteer, “if this don’t make your feet want to move, then you must be dead!” a little salsa on the patio, a little samba in the grass… even the football game at the stadium next door was no match for this show! thanks to all the Concerteers for making our first outdoor show a wonderful success!

SLAID CLEAVES

w/ Michael O’Connor

Thur, Dec 15, 2005

slaid cleaves agreed to only four shows in december, after which he planned several months r&r for songwriting. so it was indeed an honor to host him along with hill country favorite Michael O’Connor as his sideman … what a duo!

for years, this Mainer-turned-Texan plied his craft in countless forgettable joints and shacks, doing what his people call “traveling around, trying to be good,” all the while quietly establishing himself as a quintessential storyteller-musician.

slaid’s reviews read like a who’s who of journalism: NY Times, Washington Post, BBC, Rolling Stone, Chicago Sun Times, VH1, Boston Herald, CMT, and of course all the usual texas news outlets. yeah, he’s that good. and he was in my living room. i hope you were there too.

“[Slaid’s] raison d’etre is telling stories… . Like Steve Earle, he takes his cue from both Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie. While Earle now brings a more political perspective to much of his work, Slaid still concentrates on the ordinary man and his ordinary failures. .” — BBC
